Chapter 18: The Yoga of Liberation Through Renunciation

Liberation means freedom. The goal of human existence is to find happiness through freedom. To release ourselves from the shackles and chains in our lives. Chapter 18 of the Bhagavad Gita speaks on this concept. We are bound by everything and everyone. However, we cannot escape from the world and realities of life. The teachings contained in Chapter 18 explains the spiritual flow to achieve this extraordinary human quality.

Verses 54 I 55 I 56

Three unique verses of Chapter 18. Divine lessons on devotion and pure love. Devotion and love are the true essence of human nature. Now polluted by attachment and personal motives. Developing these two higher values frees you from the bondage and mental agitations.

the Three verses

54

Becoming Brahman, serene in the Self he neither grieves or desires; alike to all beings he attains the supreme devotion to me.

55

By devotion he knows Me in essence, what and who I am; then knowing Me in essence he forthwith enters into That

56

Performing all actions always taking refuge in Me, by My grace he reaches the eternal, indestructible Abode.

About the Book

The Bhagavad Gita is a timeless guide to self-discovery, revealing the higher aspirations and lower desires that shape your evolution.

The very name Bhagavad Gita — “Song of the Lord” — reflects its essence. The text begins with dharma (nature) and ends with mama (mine), symbolizing its core teaching: life’s purpose is to realise one’s true Being. Along the way,  the Gita equips you with practical wisdom to navigate life’s challenges, cultivate inner peace and act with clarity and purpose.

This commentary by Swami A. Parthasarathy features a unique topic-wise division of each chapter, clarifying the thought flow and message. The accompanying classes further decode its verses, making the Gita’s wisdom practical for daily life.
